Powersports vehicles have become increasingly popular in recent years, due to their usefulness, compact size and versatility. Among these, utility terrain vehicles (also called “UTVs”) have a larger seating capacity and are better-suited for utility work and hard labor than their other powersports counterparts.

Definition

Let’s begin by defining what a UTV is. Utility task (or, alternatively, terrain) vehicles are about a third of the size of a typical passenger car. They have bucket or bench-style seats arranged in rows of two, seating anywhere from two to six passengers side-by-side (which is their other nickname comes from). UTVs are operated using a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals, similarly to your car, and provide seatbelts for passenger safety. However, unlike your car or truck, these vehicles are open to the air, with perhaps a canvas top or half-doors, rather than a full metal enclosure.

There is cargo space in the back and between the seat rows for tools, equipment, or supplies. UTVs have powerful engines and high ground clearances approaching a foot or more to allow them to easily trundle over difficult terrain.

Uses

You can use a UTV in many different ways. Some people buy them for their businesses, to make use of them as a means of transporting work crews around a construction site, ranch, field, farm or other areas where a car or truck isn’t practical to drive. Landscaping crews can use them to carry tools and cargo around while they work. College campuses and retirement homes can use them to transport students or residents, or as janitorial crew vehicles for maintenance staff.
